Guys, there are more places in Scotland than Rockers... Like ABC2 (Glasgow), The Classic Grand (Glasgow), Royal Concert Hall (Glasgow), Liquid Rooms (Edinburgh), The Lemon Tree (Aberdeen), The Ferry (Glasgow), The Garage 1& 2 (Glasgow), The O2 Academy.... So how about a few more dates in Scotland...

A big thanks from my wife Carol and I for a great show last night at the Birdwell Venue. Hope to get to see you again when you play in Rotherham & Sheffield. Review of gig below:

A Foreigners Journey
Birdwell Venue ? Saturday 6th February 2010

With ever spiralling ticket prices there has never been a better time for tribute bands so with A Foreigners Journey you get two for the price of one. Since first getting into rock music, over thirty years ago, I have always been a huge fan of both Foreigner and Journey and have remained so over the years. I have been fortunate to see the original bands twice (though never with the legendary Steve Perry), therefore, I was really looking forward to this evening. This was my first time seeing A Foreigners Journey and my first visit to the Birdwell Venue and I have to say that I was mightily impressed with both.

A Foreigners Journey play like they have been together for years and engage in recreation of the Foreigner and Journey classis with great attention to detail. They are no karaoke band and any doubts on how good this band are, were immediately dispelled with opening track Urgent featuring excellent saxophone courtesy of Chris Backhouse. Be Good To Yourself was up next and highlighted the superb keyboard playing of Craig Brown which was clear as bell throughout the whole evening. The sound from my vantage position, at the back of the hall, was good with just the occasional feedback.

Head Games and Any Way You Want It soon followed before a brilliant rendition of Foreigner?s Waiting For A Girl Like You, a personal favourite of mine and singer Jimi Anderson. Jimi looks and sounds (when talking) similar to fellow Scot Neil Oliver of BBC?s Coast fame and handles all songs with great aplomb. From a distance Jimi has a passing resemblance to Steve Perry. Occasionally Jimi does not reach the high notes of either Lou Gramm or Steve Perry, then not many vocalists can, Kelly Hansen and Arenel Pineda notwithstanding. Personally, I think that he handles the Foreigner tracks slightly better than the Journey ones, however, there?s not much in it and all songs are very true to the originals and all are performed with great self assurance.

After initially alternating between Foreigner and Journey tracks at the start of the set the band then started playing several tracks in a row from each of the bands.
Guitarist John Oxley was outstanding throughout and really came to the fore on the Journey tracks. Completing the line up are drummer Ian Ferris and bass player Paul Flanaghan who are very strong and competent rhythm section. The whole group play like they are having the time of their lives. This conveys directly to the audience who initially were reticent to move forward onto the dance floor in front of the stage, however, by the time we got to Don?t Stop Believin? the place was really rockin?! The latter just highlights Journey?s new found popularity in the UK.

The set-list (n.b. running order might not be exact) was incredible as you can imagine with such a massive back-catalogue to choose from and was divided more or less equally between the two great groups:-

1. Urgent (Foreigner)
2. Be Good To Yourself (Journey)
3. Head Games (Foreigner)
4. Any Way You Want It (Journey)
5. Waitin? For A Girl Like You (Foreigner)
6. Stone In Love (Journey)
7. Who?s Cryin? Now (Journey)
8. Wheel In the Sky (Journey)
9. That Was Yesterday (Foreigner)
10. Feels Like The First Time (Foreigner)
11. Faithfully (Journey)
12. I Wanna Know What Love Is (Foreigner)
13. Heart Turns To Stone (Foreigner)
14. Juke Box Hero (Foreigner)
15. Cold As Ice (Foreigner)
16. Hot Blooded (Foreigner)
17. Don?t Stop Believin? (Journey)
Encore:
18. Open Arms (Journey)
19. Separate Ways (Journey)

I normally highlight my favourite tracks, however, all were just outstanding though the opening and closing numbers were worth the entrance price alone.

As you are highly unlikely to see a co-headline tour with Foreigner and Journey in the near future, A Foreigners Journey are your best bet of capturing the essence of these two bands live and at £7 a ticket, it is absolutely outstanding value for money.

Probably the biggest compliment that I can pay the band is my wife?s enjoyment of the whole gig from start to finish. Carol does not like going to that many gigs these days, especially those where she has to stand but had no complaints this evening, during a set that lasted just under two hours.

I cannot recommend enough that you should check out this band if you are a lover of Foreigner or Journey, and why wouldn?t you be?
